A doomsday atmosphere that seems almost logical, or at least unstoppable, as it echoes a general belief: human beings are primarily motivated by greed, hence our societies are organized to maximize financial profits.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>But, what if we switched filters, left that assumption on the side, and took on a more optimistic approach instead? If we assumed humankind was kind, how would it impact the news?<\/p><p>To answer these questions, we\u2019ll start by defining what is humanistic management, then illustrate its theory with empirical evidence that suggests a new way of understanding humanity, to touch upon ideas on how to teach humans to live in a world where they can actually thrive.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fa1a86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fa1a86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83e\uddd0 What\u2019s humanistic management?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e12574 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e12574\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3296727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humanistic Management<\/a> refers to a concept that encompasses practices aimed at preserving human dignity, fostering well-being, and promoting human flourishing while respecting the limits of our planet. These three values \u2014 dignity, well-being, and flourishing \u2014 can be seen as an alternative to the approach of assigning monetary values to everything, which forms the basis of economistic management.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c3620d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c3620d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What does it mean?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01c5e69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01c5e69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It mainly means <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3296727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two things:<\/a><\/p><ul><li>We don\u2019t need to put a price on everything, principally on human beings as they are intrinsically valuable thanks to their dignity.<\/li><li>It\u2019s best to think of our organizations in the long-term by aiming for sustainable flourishing, rather than in the short-term by aiming for instant wealth.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a5f83d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a5f83d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do we get there?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22d9cbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22d9cbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As Albert Einstein said, \u201cwe can\u2019t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.\u201d<\/p><p>Getting there would require us to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4jRKbhBuYIs&amp;t=1s&amp;ab_channel=HarvardUniversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reassess our perspectives<\/a> and adopt new filters through which we view and address societal issues. To switch narratives, we should consider the way we are as people, the way we organize individually, in groups, in organizations, and in society.<\/p><p>It means moving away from the economistic paradigm where humans are perceived as Homo Economicus (defined as uncaring and self-interested, driven by profit maximization) and our organizations best serve 1% of the population, to move towards a humanistic paradigm where we perceive ourselves as we actually are: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/may\/12\/humankind-a-hopeful-history-by-rutger-bregman-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homo Sapiens<\/a> that evolved according to what best served the common good. The outcome: organizing according to 99% of the population\u2019s nature and needs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f22f0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3f22f0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What does it look like?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1f1c23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c1f1c23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The most famous organization that applies humanistic management principles is <a href=\"https:\/\/martinaolbert.medium.com\/forbes-patagonia-takes-a-human-centric-approach-to-business-2c6a72859c28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patagonia,<\/a> the clothing company known for its socially responsible business practices that prioritizes sustainability, fair trade, and transparency in their operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among many other policies, it typically encourages its customers to stay healthy by going outdoors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/pamdanziger\/2021\/12\/24\/patagonia-closes-between-christmas-and-new-year-as-it-takes-a-human-centric-approach-to-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closes<\/a> its stores between Christmas and New Year\u2019s Eve to let its teams rest during the holidays, and funds environmental initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, its former CEO and founder<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/14\/climate\/patagonia-climate-philanthropy-chouinard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Yvon Chouinard<\/a> transferred ownership of the company to a non-profit organization and a trust designed to preserve the company\u2019s independence and ensure all its profits go to fighting against climate change and protecting lands from industrial exploitation<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74c0c43 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74c0c43\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">And it\u2019s successful.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17c4b3c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17c4b3c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Very much, yes. Yvon Chouinard transferred the company while it was estimated to be worth $3 billion and made about $100 million profits per year. Interestingly, one of its most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/case-study-patagonias-dont-buy-this-jacket-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successful campaigns,<\/a> launched in 2012, displayed a jacket while telling people \u201cDo not buy this jacket\u201d, and its profits jumped.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5967b9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5967b9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udc9e How does it work at the individual level?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0a00ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0a00ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Again, there are infinite ways to apply humanistic principles. A good first step, we thought, is to get to know of the Dutch journalist and historian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rutger_Bregman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rutger Bregman\u2019s<\/a> 10 principles. They are quoted from his book, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Humankind:_A_Hopeful_History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humankind, A Hopeful History Of Humanity,<\/a> which questions the assumption that humans are greedy, selfish individuals, by debunking or simply questioning socio-anthropological theories.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c13074 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2c13074\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can you tell me more about his debunking process?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff97f28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff97f28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Rutger Bregman considers our current era within the history of humanity. Verdict: we have never been as numerous, healthy, and wealthy. He attributes these achievements to our instinct for cooperation and our social abilities. According to him, trusting one another is the only path to continue progressing and the best way to empower ourselves to advocate for the common good.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-944419d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"944419d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What if he\u2019s wrong? <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a4242d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a4242d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Rutger acknowledges that his analysis could be flawed, but he doesn\u2019t care, what matters is if people buy into it, it can only lead to good things. Especially through the principle of the self-fulfilling prophecy, the driving force behind any utopia. In short, he also believes that we need a change of narratives to create a humanistic paradigm.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11f050e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"11f050e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are his 10 principles?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca342de elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca342de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>&#8220;Whenever in doubt, assume that the person in front of you has good intentions toward you.&#8221;<\/b> The idea here is that more things will turn out well for you if you choose to trust everyone rather than no one, by overcoming your negative biases.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><b>&#8220;Think in terms of win-win scenarios.&#8221;<\/b><\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"> In short: if doing good benefits you &#8211; think Patagonia &#8211; why refrain from it?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>&#8220;Change the world: ask a question.&#8221; <\/b>The principle here is to be curious about others in order to understand them better and enhance your empathy.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cTemper your empathy; cultivate compassion instead.\u201d <\/b>Rather than feeling what others feel, you can feel for them: compassion distances you from others\u2019 feelings, enabling you to take action to comfort them while preserving your energy.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cStrive to understand others, even when you don&#8217;t fully get them.\u201d<\/b> Putting your goodwill forward is often both a rational and emotional act. Because it makes you, and others, feel good, the humanistic approach often is the smartest choice you can make.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cLove your loved ones as others love their loved ones too.\u201d<\/b> It\u2019s normal to be more emotionally affected by the fate of our loved ones and those close to us than by that of distant individuals. Meaning, there\u2019s no shame in not feeling as affected by catastrophes occurring in faraway places than by ones affecting people that are similar, or close, to you.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cAvoid excessive consumption of news and spending too much time on social media.\u201d <\/b>These factors create a distance between humans that prevents love and encourages hate. (We wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/youth-talks.org\/en\/young-women-protect-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article<\/a> on the detrimental effects of social media on mental health.)<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cExtend a helping hand to your worst enemy.\u201d<\/b><\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cCome out of the closet, don&#8217;t be ashamed to do good.\u201d<\/b> Kindness is contagious, usually we are moved when we see other people giving out acts of kindness and that\u2019s called the \u201cfeeling of elevation.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><b>\u201cBe realistic.\u201d<\/b> Rutger Bregman underlines that realism and cynicism shouldn\u2019t be synonyms anymore, as humanity is fundamentally good.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3c1914 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b3c1914\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udcda What does it mean for higher education?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d78753 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d78753\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-climate-crisis-demands-we-green-higher-education-heres-how-the-french-are-going-about-it-193812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholars<\/a> have suggested schools transform the curricula in depth instead of adding humanistic modules to it. Meaning no more courses dedicated to sustainable development in parallel to other ones. Instead, they believe sustainable development should be an integral part of every course.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f25cd05 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f25cd05\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What would it look like?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d03d11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d03d11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-climate-crisis-demands-we-green-higher-education-heres-how-the-french-are-going-about-it-193812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 teaching modules:<\/a> 1\u00b0 Knowing oneself and others; 2\u00b0 Understanding the world; 3\u00b0 Transforming the world.
