These projections have sparked multiple questions: Will humans be overtaken by technology? Who will lose their jobs? What new professions and new skills will emerge? What should be taught and learned to adapt?<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-888c31a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"888c31a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This text will not attempt to answer these questions, but rather reflect on what they reveal about the phenomenon of skill transformation. Indeed, debates like the current one around AI come up every time a new technology appears, ultimately interrogating the link we\u2019ve traditionally established between\u00a0 school-based skills and the job market.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1eabb94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1eabb94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83c\udfebWhat\u2019s this transformation of skills about exactly?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6467a2f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6467a2f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The transformation of skills refers to the ongoing process of changes and adaptations that occur in the job market and the skills required to succeed in it. This process is driven by a variety of factors, including technological advancements, changes in the economy, and evolving social and cultural trends.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94c5ebb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"94c5ebb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What does it mean for (future) workers?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13de272 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"13de272\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The transformation of skills requires individuals and organizations to be flexible and adaptable in order to keep up with changes in the job market. This can include investing in ongoing education and training, seeking out new opportunities to develop skills and gain experience, and staying informed about emerging trends and technologies in their field.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e1dded elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8e1dded\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can you give me an example?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c42545 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c42545\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After ChatGPT came out, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2303.10130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">study by Cornell University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> concluded that nearly 80% of professional roles will see at least 10% of their tasks directly transformed by AI tomorrow. And 50% of the task of the remaining 20% would be impacted.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It also created a wave of predictions, formulated by people that are more or less legitimate on the topic, but who had some ideas on what jobs would emerge thanks to this new technology.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among others, here are two examples of skills that could emerge due to AI technologies like ChatGPT:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data labeling. E.g. Someone that flags AI-generated texts as accurate or inaccurate to improve its responses.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prompt engineering. E.g. A person able to customize ChatGPT queries to adapt them to a business\u2019 needs.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bac5548 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bac5548\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83e\udd14Does it mean I should quit school and start learning \u201cdata labeling\u201d right now?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e37ce4a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e37ce4a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not really. The thing is that narratives about the transformation of skills keep repeating themselves, meaning they shouldn&#8217;t be taken too seriously, or at least that we should give ourselves some time to adapt and actually take time to introduce a new technology into our lives before creating 100% new scholar programmes or jobs. This happened before with many other things.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5a1d79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b5a1d79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sure, but this one isn\u2019t this wave supposed to be as big as the Internet?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32d2c5f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32d2c5f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s what many people are predicting, but the thing is, when looking at the big picture, the Internet didn\u2019t change the global job market as much as expected.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef42d5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ef42d5e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How so?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8746aa3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8746aa3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The American economist and New York Times columnist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/messaging-custom-newsletters.nytimes.com\/template\/oakv2?campaign_id=116&amp;emc=edit_pk_20230404&amp;instance_id=89400&amp;nl=paul-krugman&amp;productCode=PK&amp;regi_id=73208665&amp;segment_id=129569&amp;te=1&amp;uri=nyt%3A%2F%2Fnewsletter%2Fb092df8a-0a6a-5713-affa-9a5a6c258914&amp;user_id=ac5f4ef527c922173b6b0a75e53fd581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paul Krugman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that even though the Internet generated some economic growth, it failed to produce the productivity boom that people expected to happen thanks to its rise (yes, that\u2019s also what we\u2019re expecting from AI today). In short, we tend to get excited about information technology, but its repercussions on the real economy aren\u2019t that visible, especially in the wealthiest countries.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6208cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d6208cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What else?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4935c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f4935c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yourproductpill.substack.com\/p\/we-should-stop-raving-about-ai-heres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Others<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> underline that despite all the hype around its capacities, information technology developments rely on an invisible, and usually discriminated, workforce. This phenomena is important, when speaking of the transformation of skills, because it highlights that sought-out skills don\u2019t only change depending on technological trends, but also according to socio-economics.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b0cc408 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b0cc408\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What\u2019s an example of socio-economics influencing sought-out skills?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d68d56d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d68d56d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, software programming was perceived as a linguistics job similar to typewriting, hence most developers were female. Back in 1946, a group of six female computers &#8211; at the time, the word still indicated \u201cthe skill\/job of computing\u201d &#8211; created the first-ever form of AI for NASA: the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC). Until a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/ondemand\/eniac6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">documentary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> came out about their accomplishments in 2023, they didn\u2019t get any recognition for programming outbreaking products for NASA. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81e11fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"81e11fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Now, most developers are male and well-paid.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dfbdeb5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dfbdeb5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, and since the skill of programming became \u201csexy\u201d, the number of coding schools and classes has exploded. But history is repeating itself: the company that built ChatGPT, OpenAI, paid a Kenya-based data labeling service to ingest massive amounts of AI-generated answers, moderate these answers, and flag them if they were offensive. Those data labellers were paid between $1.32 and $2 per hour, and their work was revealed thanks to journalistic investigations, not the founders of OpenAI.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-512588b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"512588b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udca1Skills and jobs continuously change.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-540357a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"540357a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exactly, everything regarding the job\/skill market changes all the time, slowly but surely, as the term \u201ctransformation of skills\u201d suggests. And it looks like we got used to it: the French philosopher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gloriamedia.createsend1.com\/t\/d-l-zulllhl-l-u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Julia de Fun\u00e8s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explains that people working today are already more comfortable with that concept than the former generation of workers. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/davismsmith_the-median-job-tenure-of-a-55-64-year-old-activity-6952658123484516352--p77?trk=public_profile_like_view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">study by LinkedIn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that workers aged 25-34 in the United States had an average tenure of just 2.8 years with their current employer, while workers aged 55-64 had an average tenure of 10.1 years.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c8054a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c8054a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is that?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c82a8ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c82a8ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to another French philosopher, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/celinemartyphilosophie\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">C\u00e9line Marty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we were disappointed by the promises the school-job-parenting-society apparatus made to us about jobs. Three main trends explain that: they\u2019re not accessible to everyone that studies for them, they don\u2019t guarantee a decent quality of living regardless of your social origins, and even though they are less harmful for our bodies, they are more damaging to our mental health.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9537da4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9537da4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Linear careers aren\u2019t trending anymore.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c183c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c183c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exactly. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gloriamedia.createsend1.com\/t\/d-l-zulllhl-l-u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Julia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explains that it\u2019s due to the change of perception about what jobs should be. For our parents, they were an end, but for us, they should be a means to another end: our well-being, at both individual and society levels. And that makes us see skills in a very different light.\u00a0 We don\u2019t pursue skills to work jobs hoping for a thriving career. Instead, we pursue skills to work jobs that will make us feel better. And to accomplish that, the best skill is to be accepting of uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-045bcb7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"045bcb7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83e\uddd8\u200d\u2642\ufe0fHow can I master the art of uncertainty?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52a8661 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52a8661\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To answer that, we read a book written by podcast host <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nouveloeil_\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Victoria Guillomon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which she wrote between 18-22 years old, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What we don\u2019t learn in school &#8211; Young people see the world differently<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (for now, it\u2019s only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decitre.fr\/livres\/ce-qu-on-n-apprend-pas-a-l-ecole-9782378831578.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">available in French<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). She tells us how she realized she never knew, and will probably never know, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> she wants to be \u201cin the next five years\u201d.\u00a0 However, she might have an idea of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> she wants to be according to a sum of values that she knows contributes to her own, and society\u2019s, well-being. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3133af4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3133af4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What does it mean?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6819fe9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6819fe9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Victoria says that \u201caccepting that we do not know what our life will be made of turns out to be essential later on.\u201d She puts this principle in opposition to the rigidity imposed by the idea that jobs should match what we learned at school. For her, it doesn\u2019t make sense to think like that, because of the transformation of skills phenomena, that\u2019s continuously ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48164e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"48164e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">I wonder what a school teaching that could look like.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6058c46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6058c46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It already exists. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/pi-top\/meet-the-school-with-no-classes-no-classrooms-and-no-curriculum-7cc7be517cef\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a Dutch school where children decide what they study and how, regardless of their age, with a coach they choose from an educational team that\u2019s at their disposal. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdfb915 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cdfb915\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Does it work?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a835de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6a835de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Agora school hasn&#8217;t been around long enough to compare the career\/life of its students to those of a traditional school. However, the children report that they have more confidence in themselves since attending school there, and that there is no school bullying.
