To help you with that, you can check your mental health vital signs by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/checking-our-mental-health-vital-signs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the grid<\/a> offered by Quebec\u2019s physician health program. It is structured according to four levels of well-being: healthy, reacting, at risk, and critical.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8dc5f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c8dc5f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How does it work?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae25671 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae25671\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s quite simple. To find out how your mental health is doing with regards to this continuum, there is a list of very clearly-stated signs such as \u201cdifficulty sleeping\u201d, \u201cphysically inactive\u201d, or \u201cunable to concentrate\u201d. Moreover, it lists the ways you can take care of your mental health according to your state, like \u201creaching out to peers\u201d or \u201ccontacting a professional\u201d.<\/p><p>The objective is to check in with yourself as soon as you feel down and seek the right strategy to keep yourself in, or get back to, the \u201chealthy\u201d zone.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b508f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0b508f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udcdd What are the most common mental health issues?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7651c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7651c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First of all, keep in mind that mental health issues are very common, hence there is no shame in encountering them, and the best way to address them is to talk about them. Why? Because that\u2019s how you will find the right kind of help, as there are as many solutions as there are mental health issues, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(21)02143-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most common<\/a> ones being stress, anxiety, and depression.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-769c538 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"769c538\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Let\u2019s start with stress.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-960e086 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"960e086\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO), stress is \u201cphysical, emotional or psychological strain, your body&#8217;s response to anything that requires attention or action.\u201d<\/p><p>Stress is experienced by absolutely everyone, but we each respond to it in very different ways, and our responses depend on our context. The medical community designated three main<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theskimm.com\/wellness\/acute-stress-disorder-chronic-stress-types-of-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> types of stress<\/a> based on how long, why, and when we are stressed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e657d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4e657d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Tell me more.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07aa69e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07aa69e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>The most common one is <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.org.au\/for-the-public\/psychology-topics\/stress\/types-of-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acute stress.<\/a> It\u2019s short-term, caused by specific situations, and triggers \u201cfight or flight\u201d behavior. For example, you can sweat or get stomach aches during a school presentation.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.org.au\/for-the-public\/psychology-topics\/stress\/types-of-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chronic stress<\/a> symptoms can be harmful to your health because of how long they last. For example, it\u2019s okay to have trouble sleeping on a couple of nights during exam week but not sleeping throughout the entire week is harmful.<\/li><\/ul><div><span style=\"font-family: urbanist\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/understand\/related\/acute_stress.asp#:~:text=Acute%20Stress%20Disorder%20(ASD)%20is,one%20month%20to%20have%20PTSD.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acute stress disorder<\/a> emerges within a month after a traumatic event such as losing someone, witnessing an accident, or sexual assault. It\u2019s different from acute stress because its symptoms are triggered by a specific event, more critical, and last longer. They include but are not limited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/dissociative-disorders\/what-are-dissociative-disorders#:~:text=Dissociation%20is%20a%20disconnection%20between,process%20that%20everyone%20has%20experienced.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dissociation,<\/a> anxiety, repetitive dark thoughts, or constant reminiscing of the traumatic event. If it lasts longer than a month, it\u2019s important to go to a doctor as it could develop into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/understand\/what\/ptsd_basics.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PTSD.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15a8bd7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"15a8bd7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Is there a silver lining?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6348d28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6348d28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Absolutely! Acute stress is typically harmless and you could even make it your best friend, notably thanks to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">great video.<\/a> Both chronic stress and acute stress disorder are usually successfully treated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theskimm.com\/wellness\/theskimm-on-therapy-and-if-its-right-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">therapy.<\/a> Finally, don\u2019t think that stress has to be part of your life. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240003927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keep it at bay<\/a> by talking about what freaks you out to someone you trust, getting your body moving every day thanks to walks or exercise, or breathing mindfully.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a30e8b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a30e8b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What about anxiety?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-789e51d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"789e51d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>You can tell you are confronted with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inserm.fr\/dossier\/troubles-anxieux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anxiety disorders<\/a> if you feel unsafe when there is no real threat, to the point where your fears prevent you from going on with your life as per usual. For example, you might have <strong>social anxiety<\/strong> if you are terrified of social interactions and prefer staying home.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-126b0a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"126b0a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are the other types of anxiety disorders?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa2fe90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fa2fe90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inserm.fr\/dossier\/troubles-anxieux\/#lanxi%C3%A9t%C3%A9-g%C3%A9n%C3%A9ralis%C3%A9e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Generalized anxiety<\/a> consists of constantly and excessively worrying about daily matters such as school, our family\u2019s health, or doing groceries. There can also be physical symptoms like restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, or sleep disturbances.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inserm.fr\/dossier\/troubles-anxieux\/#le-trouble-panique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Panic disorder<\/a> is a feeling of intense fear that causes recurrent panic attacks which combine physical and psychological distress. It can develop into heart attacks.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inserm.fr\/dossier\/troubles-anxieux\/#les-phobies-sp%C3%A9cifiques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Specific phobias<\/a> are unreasonable, excessive and persistent fears of specific situations or objects, among which <strong>agoraphobia,<\/strong> the fear of public spaces. Phobias are more or less severe depending on how scared you are and how often they force you to put your life on hold.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inserm.fr\/dossier\/troubles-anxieux\/#le-trouble-danxi%C3%A9t%C3%A9-de-s%C3%A9paration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Separation anxiety disorder<\/a> is the fear of being separated from someone close to you.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7fe560f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7fe560f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What can I do if I have anxiety?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a32d14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a32d14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>You can start by sharing it with someone you trust, then go to a doctor that will know how to diagnose your mental health issues and offer you the right kind of professional support. In most cases, people heal from anxiety issues thanks to therapy (usually<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/ptsd-guideline\/patients-and-families\/cognitive-behavioral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Cognitive Behavioral Therapy<\/a>) and sometimes medication.
