This month, we explore the topic of mental health, its importance and its evolution across time, with a focus on young people and global initiatives helping others take care of themselves.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f65f2de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f65f2de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Even though social media (SoMe) were designed to improve online interactions and strengthen or create healthy relationships around common centers of interest, it has been proven that they also are a Troyan horse for mental health issues, especially among the youth. With that in mind, our second article\u2019s purpose is to give you an overview of inspiring initiatives led by young women who are working to turn the Internet into a safe space for its users.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b09481 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0b09481\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83c\udfaf Fighting against cyberbullying<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-86b0e2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"86b0e2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is cyberbullying and what are its consequences on mental health?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efe0793 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efe0793\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/end-violence\/how-to-stop-cyberbullying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNICEF,<\/a> cyberbullying is \u201cbullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms and mobile phones. It is repeated behaviour, aimed at scaring, angering or shaming those who are targeted.\u201d<\/p><p>Because cyberbullying occurs online, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6278213\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">victims<\/a> are under the impression that their attackers are omnipresent, following them everywhere, affecting them emotionally (e.g. feelings of loneliness, stress and anxiety, dark thoughts and depression) and physically (e.g. insomnia, stomach aches, headaches).<\/p><p>As a result and in the most severe cases, they can commit suicide: <a href=\"https:\/\/dataprot.net\/statistics\/cyberbullying-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the U.S. in 2022,<\/a> 15% of young cyberbullying victims would prefer to keep the issue a secret and students were almost twice as likely to attempt suicide if they had been cyberbullied.<\/p><p>If you are a victim of cyberbullying or witness cyberbullying, it is vital to talk about it and protect your well-being. You can go to a friend, a trusted adult like your parents, another family member, or a professor. There are also specialized support <a href=\"https:\/\/findahelpline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">services.<\/a><\/p><p>The other urgent step is to block the people that are harming you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/safety\/en\/bullying-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrict<\/a>\u00a0your privacy policies, or even delete the apps. Cyberbullying is to be taken seriously and is punishable by law in most countries: consider saving the content that harmed you in case you want to pursue legal action against your attackers later.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-664be49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"664be49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">StopFisha, the France-based feminist collective fighting against cyberbullying<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eac6e65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eac6e65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@stopfisha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stop Fisha<\/a> was founded by 15 young women, who were then in high school, in 2020 during COVID-19 lockdowns. It\u2019s a feminist association that fights against cyber sexism and sexist, sexual cyber violence. It was created as lockdowns triggered a jump in the number of cyber-attacks and mental health issues among young people, especially the ones aged between 18-24 years old, who represented 22% of cyberbullying victims.<\/p><p>Stop Fisha members structure their actions according to four main goals: 1) they investigate dangerous accounts and supply detailed information to the police and justice system, 2) support victims and provide legal assistance, 3) raise awareness around cyber harassment through schools and the media, and 4) advocate change by collaborating with policymakers at both the national and European levels.<\/p><p>If you are a French speaker, you can follow Stop Fisha on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stopfisha\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stopfisha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter.<\/a> Otherwise, you can watch their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@stopfisha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> videos as most of them are in English.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8a8dce elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a8a8dce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Kind Campaign, the American movement that wants girls to take care of each other<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a5870b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a5870b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kind campaign<\/a> was founded by Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson in 2009 after they met at a university in California and shared their past experiences as victims of girl-against-girl bullying. To kick off their initiative, they shot a documentary about the issue, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finding Kind,<\/a><\/em> as they visited one school after another to gather testimonials and spread their Kind Program.<\/p><p>Their goal is to \u201cbring awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl bullying\u201d. On the field, this translates into educational content like their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/kind-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magazine<\/a> (you can read every issue online for free, by clicking on the covers), in-school assemblies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Kind-Campaign-History-Mission-Programming-Impact.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curriculums,<\/a> and a global movement built on online tools and campaigns that you can use.<\/p><p>If you\u2019d like to join the Kind movement, you can start by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/category\/tap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sending them<\/a> a message about your experience as a victim or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindcampaign.com\/category\/tap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apology note<\/a> if you have also been the propagator of girl-against-girl bullying.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf2328e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf2328e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83c\udf08 Promoting healthy social media content <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-779a211 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"779a211\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How are SoMe affecting the youth\u2019s mental health?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61e3f83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"61e3f83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A wide number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kimelsesser\/2021\/10\/05\/heres-how-instagram-harms-young-women-according-to-research\/?sh=3c46dcdf255a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">academic studies<\/a> have demonstrated the harmful impact of SoMe on young people and especially among female users. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/republicans\/2021\/12\/is-instagram-causing-poorer-mental-health-among-teen-girls#:~:text=The%20researchers%20found%2029%25%20of,harm%20and%2020%25%20experienced%20depression.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers<\/a> found 29% of girls who spent three or more hours per day on social media engaged in self-harm and 31% of girls who spent five or more hours on social media were depressed. Moreover, SoMe seem to aggravate low self-esteem, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1740144517305326#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appearance anxiety,<\/a> and body dissatisfaction, especially when they are appearance-focused (think, Instagram and TikTok versus Reddit and Facebook).<\/p><p>Another issue with SoMe, if we start using them when we are still teenagers, is they affect the way our brains work as they are still developing. For example, the brain\u2019s reward center is activated when users receive <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0956797616645673?casa_token=Km9MPBGyK5cAAAAA%3AoXQ168uI4ycJOO3kxAwXaFW4CSZG3hpXViffJTEvNbMsOXFOFtIfkmxSWkxWu_5qqIH2ZC8Oy-RW6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201clikes\u201d<\/a> which led researchers to conclude that \u201cadolescents use this cue to learn how to navigate their social world\u201d, which can result in young adults constantly seeking external validation, a recipe for mental health problems.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6698f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c6698f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Influencers that wish you good<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc65804 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fc65804\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Even though SoMe can be toxic for young (female) users, they can benefit your well-being because they also help you communicate with others, and if you don\u2019t feel like going off the grid, there\u2019s a mid-way: exclusively follow accounts that make you feel good.<\/p><p>Don\u2019t know where to start? We curated a list of top Instagram and TikTok influencers that publish content to make others feel good, take care of their mental health, be proud of their body, and ignore toxic injunctions.<\/p><p>On Instagram, you can follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/projectheal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project HEAL<\/a> which focuses on helping out people with eating disorders,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/werenotreallystrangers\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> we\u2019re not really strangers<\/a> that discusses emotions and self-love, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/effyourbeautystandards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFF YOUR BEAUTY STANDARDS<\/a> that debunks unrealistic aesthetic injunctions. All three accounts spread tips, testimonials, and inspiring quotes to make you smile and feel confident, while fully acknowledging that, at times, life and people hurt.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re more into following people than organizations, there are millions of young women with accounts that are all about self-love and honesty. Musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aliciakeys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alicia Keys<\/a> shares inspiring quotes about vulnerability and confidence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rupikaur_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rupi kaur<\/a> writes poems to share her struggle with depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/meganjaynecrabbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and Megan Jayne Crabble<\/a> publishes self-portraits and tips to love your body as it is. Lastly, if you have a thing for space stuff, you can follow NASA astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/astro_jessica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessica Meir.<\/a><\/p><p>On TikTok, therapist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lindsay.fleminglpc?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindsay Fleming<\/a> gives tips on how to manage stress and anxiety, but also more generally speaks out about mental health to denounce harmful stereotypes on the topic. Another therapist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nadiaaddesi?referer_url=www.mmm-online.com%2Fhome%2Fchannel%2Fthe-top-10-mental-health-influencers-on-tiktok%2F&amp;refer=embed&amp;embed_source=121331973%2C120811592%2C120810756%3Bnull%3Bembed_name&amp;referer_video_id=6940419564425481477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nadia Addesi,<\/a> spreads tons of tips to \u201cclean\u201d your SoMe feeds and boost your self-confidence.
