This month, we explore the topic of mental health, its importance and its evolution across time, with a focus on young people and global initiatives helping others take care of themselves.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc14e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cc14e35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mental health has been increasingly discussed by the media since the COVID-19 crisis, as related deaths and hospitalizations, lockdowns and social restrictions, deeply affected it. Among other alerting numbers, global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(21)02143-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rates<\/a> of depression and anxiety rose by more than 25% in 2020, with 20 to 24-year-olds enduring the largest leap of all.<\/p><p>This article\u2019s objective is to provide you with basic knowledge about mental health, touch upon the multiple reasons why young people\u2019s mental health was more affected by recent events than other categories of the population, and some ways to cope. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e18c74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9e18c74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udcda What is mental health?  <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4515bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c4515bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-strengthening-our-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO), \u201cmental health is a state of well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.\u201d It is crucial because good mental health allows you to:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Make decisions for yourself (personal development),<\/li><li>Make friends and nourish your social life (community development),<\/li><li>Work and make a living (socio-economic development).\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><br \/>It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/why-do-we-need-to-talk-about-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as important<\/a> as your body health: if you were a car, mental health would be your fuel, the energy that makes you capable of going through stuff without breaking down even when your life gets bumpy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/mhstats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For example<\/a> in the United States, people with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases than the general population.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-163d545 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"163d545\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are the different kinds of mental health issues?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05a8adc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"05a8adc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is a wide range of mental health and the WHO defined two categories of issues based on when they emerge, how long they last, and how much they impede a person\u2019s development: <\/p><ul><li><strong>Reactive psychological distress,<\/strong> caused by an event such as grief, difficulties at school, family issues. The most common symptoms are of depressive and anxious nature, often temporary and do not require specialized care. It is a &#8220;normal adaptive response&#8221; that must be taken care of so that it does not persist and worsen into an actual depression or disabling anxiety disorder.<\/li><li><strong>Psychiatric disorders<\/strong> of varying duration, more or less severe and disabling, which are diagnosed according to precise criteria and taken care of thanks to targeted therapeutic actions. Such issues include personality disorders like bipolarity and require medical care.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89a6bcd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89a6bcd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What can impact someone\u2019s mental health? <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d0463f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d0463f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-strengthening-our-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">each person<\/a> has their life history and sensitivities, three types of determinants can affect mental health: individual, social, and structural.<\/p><ul><li>At the <strong>individual level,<\/strong> we each have our emotional skills or can be addicted to substances, which makes us more or less vulnerable to mental health problems.<\/li><li>At the <strong>social level,<\/strong> unfavorable circumstances like poverty, violence, and economic inequalities can increase the risks of experiencing mental health issues. On the upside, positive social interactions, a good level of education, and a safe environment can reduce those risks.<\/li><li>And finally, at the <strong>structural level,<\/strong> events such as economic crises, pandemics, humanitarian emergencies, and environmental disasters can affect our mental health.<\/li><\/ul><p>Moreover, it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/mental-health-and-substance-use\/world-mental-health-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been found<\/a> that the more unequal and polarized a country\u2019s population, the higher the prevalence of schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and substance use. In short, the poorest groups are consistently more concerned by mental health issues.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37651af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"37651af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83e\udd14 And what about the youth?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce0599a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ce0599a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First of all, mental health is worsening for everyone, with a general rise in depression, anxiety, and stress. The latest Gallup Report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/analytics\/349280\/gallup-global-emotions-report.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Emotions<\/a> conducted at a global level and with people older than 15 concluded that \u201cin 2021, negative emotions \u2014 the aggregate of the stress, sadness, anger, worry and physical pain that people feel every day \u2014 reached a new record\u201d after increasing for a decade.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4394ed1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4394ed1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">And young people?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-833c13a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"833c13a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Moreover, the increase in the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/feature-stories\/detail\/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-mental-health-cannot-be-made-light-of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youths<\/a> reporting feelings of distress took the biggest leap with the COVID-19 pandemic as their feelings of self-esteem and connection to others were affected by social isolation. For example in the United States, the Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/03\/16\/many-americans-continue-to-experience-mental-health-difficulties-as-pandemic-enters-second-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> 45% of people under 30 felt \u201cnervous, anxious or on edge\u201d at least \u201coccasionally or a moderate amount of time\u201d while only 28% of people aged 30 and older answered the same way. Overall, 32% of adults ages 18 to 29 feel psychological distress.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-900f568 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"900f568\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do we explain this increase?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e1c969 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e1c969\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00175-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> conducted to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health concluded that the pandemic is the source of the increase in mental disorders among youths, especially anxiety with regards to the future that awaits them.<\/p><p>Indeed, social determinants like isolation, school closures and other restrictions, and structural determinants such as the climate crisis, economic instability and rising unemployment, have particularly disrupted their daily lives, as opposed to older people who are generally less dependent on going out for socializing and leading more stable professional careers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5aeff0c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5aeff0c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What else?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a242a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a242a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Another consequence of the outbreak was a peak in the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/republicans\/2021\/12\/is-instagram-causing-poorer-mental-health-among-teen-girls#:~:text=The%20researchers%20found%2029%25%20of,harm%20and%2020%25%20experienced%20depression.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media,<\/a> which worsened an existing issue, the link between mental health issues and social media. For example, from 2001 to 2017, adolescent depression rates increased by 60%, with the largest increase among women. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95ff671 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"95ff671\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The more time you spend watching screens, the more depressed you can get.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adde553 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"adde553\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes. And the rise of social media also gave birth to <a href=\"https:\/\/lesglorieuses.fr\/hello-vous-doomscrollez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cdoom scrolling\u201d,<\/a> a word that emerged in 2018, which means \u201cendlessly consume content online\u201d. Even though it doesn\u2019t create anxieties, it can aggravate existing ones for people prone to anxiety as they try to reassure themselves and control the news by seeking more of them. The problem is the way our brains work, they treat negative information as a threat and respond by producing cortisol, the stress hormone that amplifies anxiety.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d5227d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d5227d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What about social media?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f135435 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f135435\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Depression, lower self-esteem, appearance anxiety, body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and even suicidal thoughts have been linked to the use of social media, especially among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kimelsesser\/2021\/10\/05\/heres-how-instagram-harms-young-women-according-to-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">young women on Instagram.<\/a> The problem: when users compare themselves to others posting unrealistic pictures of themselves, it triggers feelings of self-depreciation, which can spiral into severe mental health issues.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8254ac5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8254ac5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udc69\u200d\u2695\ufe0f How can I take care of my mental health?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4360efe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4360efe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Should I start with less screen time?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01f8737 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01f8737\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s an excellent first step. Everyone is vulnerable to doom scrolling, but it is possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/lesglorieuses.fr\/hello-vous-doomscrollez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce risks<\/a> of anxiety with a more thoughtful use of social networks, for example by choosing what we look at: media that broadcast good news and make us smile, credible influencers who look like us, cultural content that inspires us&#8230; And if you want to go further than that, you can mimic the young American movement made up of high schoolers abandoning their smartphones for flip phones, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/15\/style\/teens-social-media.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Luddites.<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aeff3e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aeff3e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What else can I do?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f50c526 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f50c526\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On a daily basis, you can:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Exercise:<\/strong> it releases endorphins, which reduce anxiety and stress, to make you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipubli.inserm.fr\/bitstream\/handle\/10608\/97\/Chapitre_21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feel good.<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Sleep 7-9 hours per night:<\/strong> it\u2019s necessary to reset your brain and body, to better process emotions and memory.<\/li><li><strong>Eat well,<\/strong> or at least whatever makes you feel great.<\/li><li><strong>Practice breathing exercises<\/strong>: take <a href=\"https:\/\/link.theskimm.com\/view\/62a75ff708d9078c1607e7bchk8y8.ju\/5a346b54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep breaths<\/a> to signal your brain to calm down and slow your heart rate.<\/li><li><strong>Meditate:<\/strong> it can teach your brain to dissociate from your thoughts and to better manage your emotions. <\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1935d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b1935d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What about therapy?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-347b0a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"347b0a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications-detail-redirect\/9789240036703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for everyone,<\/a> you don\u2019t necessarily have to be diagnosed with a mental illness to benefit from it. There are five main types of therapy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theskimm.com\/wellness\/theskimm-on-therapy-and-if-its-right-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cognitive behavioral therapy,<\/strong><\/a> which focuses on thought patterns to \u201ctwitch\u201d them in a positive way, <strong>psychodynamic therapy<\/strong> that relies on Freudian theories and memories, <strong>acceptance and commitment therapy<\/strong> comes with a focus on feelings, <strong>schema therapy<\/strong> helps people identify behavioral or cognitive patterns, and <strong>emotion-focused therapy<\/strong> helps with relationship issues.<\/p><p>Depending on how you are feeling and your needs, there are a lot of different kinds of therapies, but a good place to start is with your usual practitioner, who can guide you with all the right info.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6147b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c6147b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>We will get into more detail about different types of issues and treatments in an article that will be published in a couple of weeks, stay tuned!<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c1f0a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c1f0a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83e\udde0 Recap<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a4b620 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a4b620\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A mental health that is taken care of allows you to face life events, while keeping psychological disorders at bay.
